Position / Identity
48% of the terrain of the Prefecture is in a plain, 25% of it is semi-mountainous and 27% of it is mountainous.
The plain of Larissa is very new in geological terms.
The basin was formed in the Middle Pleistocene Age (about 210,000 or 45,000 years ago) while one half of the plain has been formed in the last 8,000 years.
Mountain
The high chains of mountains in the north part of the Prefecture constitute one of the main features of it.
Mounts Karvounia, Titanon, Olympus, Ossa, Mavrovouni, Filihio, Halkodonio or Kinos Kefale, Narthaki or Kassidiaris, Titanio or Dovroutsi and Oxia constitute a natural borderline.
Sea
On the east side of the Prefecture of Larissa there is one of the most beautiful coastlines in Greece. As it hasn’t undergone the harmful effects of mass tourism it still preserves the old values that modern town-dwellers long for: crystal-clear sea water, a virgin natural environment and a rich cultural tradition.
From Stomio and Pinios Delta to mount Pelion, tourists are deeply impressed by the numerous bays and marvelous sandy beaches, the luxuriant vegetation and the gurgling water of the rivers that have their sources on the mountains of Kissavos and Mavrovouni.Visitors can enjoy a magic view of the Aegean Sea and of Halkidiki.
